The oldest story told by the cities of the dead of Staol di Curago and Pian de La Gnela.
The extraordinary discovery of these two important archaeological sites at about 900 m above sea level, has brought to light two necropolises, the Roman one of Staol di Curago and the pre-Roman one of Pian de La Gnela, along the slopes of Monte Dolada in the surroundings of Pieve d’Alpago in places that can only be reached on foot.
The finds of great importance and artistic value are, as of today, partially preserved at the “Natural History Museum” of Chies d’Alpago, such as the bronze or glass cinerary urns with their respective grave goods consisting of fibulae and coins found in the Staol necropolis dating back to the 1st up to the 4th century A.D.
In Pian de la Gnela’s site, a spectacular stained bronze situla dated to the 6th century BC was unearthed, a one-of-a-kind cinerary urn that shows a procession of characters that ends at the base with erotic scenes and a scene of a birth that is unmatched in any find of this type.
Some little horses in glass paste were also found, as well as elements of an amber jewel and a bronze scepter. At the moment, these finds are not exhibited, because the museum is waiting to be able to enhance them in the most appropriate way.
